This presentation features Caroline Heldman, Associate Professor of Politics, Occidental College.   Professor Heldman specializes in the presidency, media, gender, and race in the American context.  Her topic for this presentation will be "The Concrete Ceiling? Explaining the Under-Representation of Women in U.S. Leadership."

Professor Heldman will examine the decade-long stagnation and recent decline of women in national U.S. politics with particular emphasis on media narratives as a persistent barrier. She will present data on media coverage of female presidential and vice presidential candidates (including Geraldine Ferraro, Elizabeth Dole, Hillary Clinton, and Sarah Palin) to illustrate the double standards women continue to face when vying for public office.
