Students Gain Recognition and Support for "Fence Isla Vista Campaign"

A group of students in Professor Bimber’s PS 171 class are gaining attention through their Fence Isla Vista campaign.  The campaign, which began as a project for their class, has extended beyond the classroom.  Professor Bimber issued an assignment for his students to create a social media campaign around a topic of interest.  Six of the students gathered together and decided to focus on an issue that was important to them.  Inspired by two recent deaths from cliff falls, the students focused on increasing fence safety along the cliffs in Isla Vista to prevent future cliff-related falls.

The Fence Isla Vista group surveyed the cliff-side sections of Isla Vista noting varying levels of inadequate and adequate fencing.  To date their campaign has garnered 292 signatures for their petition to improve current fencing stability and safety standards.  They have received attention both on campus and in the community and were recently featured in The Independent.
