Academic researchers have traditionally been tasked with not only generating new knowledge, but sharing it – with students, professional peers, decision-makers, and the publicat large.  Digital technologies have radically transformed the communication landscape, but the field of political science has yet to come to terms with the implications for professional practice.  The Social Rules Project uses a variety of digital media to make the concept of institutional analysis more accessible to students and the general public.  In 2015, the International Studies Association recognized this effort by awarding its director, Dr. Paul Steinberg of Harvey Mudd College, the Deborah Gerner Award for Innovation in Teaching.  In this seminar, Dr. Steinberg reflects on the opportunities and challenges that arise when sharing serious content in novel and entertaining ways.

Paul Steinberg is Professor of Political Science and Environmental Policy at Harvey Mudd College, where he directs The Social Rules Project.  He is the author of three books: Who Rules the Earth? (Oxford University Press), Comparative Environmental Politics (MIT Press) and Environmental Leadership in Developing Countries (MIT Press), which won the International Studies Association’s Harold and Margaret Sprout Award for the best book in international environmental affairs.  He has held academic posts at the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University and at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins.  He has also worked in applied positions with the Natural Resources Defense Council, Conservation International, The World Bank, RARE, Pesticide Action Network, and the US Peace Cops. He serves on the editorial boardfor the journal Global Environmental Politics.
